Wetherby-spawned indie punk stalwarts Boyracer are back after a 4-year break with what is being touted as their final ever release. And it tops off an enormously prolific output for this underground indie outfit. Subject to about as many line-up changes as you'd expect a band with over 20 years behind them to have had, this features guitarist Matt Green's return. Available on limited edition 7" coloured vinyl, with free 6 song download code.

- Pete Shelley EP by Boyracer

Here's the second of four Emotional Response singles I have to write about this week, and it's by Boyracer. Yes, THE Boyracer. I had no idea they were still going, but as it happens they are (although these are apparently their final recordings). Anyway, the indie rock legends are on sparkling form on this EP, where they pay tribute to everyone's favourite musical chameleon Pete Shelley.
The four numbers here are fairly straightforward indie rock but done perfectly, in a way that has always drawn a lot of comparisons to Guided By Voices. The songs are simple and streamlined, the tones are all vigorous jangle and ecstatic distortion, the lyrics are all teenage heartache but framed in a simple and affecting way. Best track here is '2nd Wave Mod' which is like The Auteurs doing a break-up song while all amped up on coffee and jellybeans, a brilliant mixture of spat-out angst and ricocheting energy that's reminding me why I loved indie pop in the first place. Let's hope that these are only their last ever recordings in a Guided By Voices kind of way.
