7/10 Li'l Biz Staff review, 19 August 2014

I kinda enjoyed the Leisure Birds debut 'Globe Master' (prior to us all getting beaten to death with neu-psych) so I was pleased to note that Deep Distance had been kind enough to prop up their current release in the UK (Moon Glyph are taking care of it elsewhere) with a limited run of sweet looking gatefold 12s.

Now, this Minnapolis lot tread well trodden ground in terms of kraut-influenced psychedelia, the only difference being that they are actually quite good at it. Claiming that this is “What psychedelic music will sound like in ten years” (Bong Magazine France) might be a bit far fetched but they are good and they do infuse their psych with a heavy dose of synths giving it a retro-futurist feel.

For the most part this is heavy on drone based vocals over synth and organ variants that, at times, sound like something from a lost sci-fi television series or a lost Radiophonic Workshop snippet (I know, lazy comparison). But they are at their best in the kraut influenced motorik moments ('Seven Spirals') i.e. when the drums get some! For those of you with the patience for such outings, this will be a true blessing to your record collection.
