Mojo Storm is a duo from Liverpool comprised of flautist/sax player Phil Hargreaves as well as sound healer, meditation leader and drumming aficonado Kevin Paton. Their new record, 'Life', melds a variety of world music influences -- from African Blues to reggae and South American dance music -- into a uniform acoustic sound with a politically-charged lyrical edge. 'Life' is focused primarily on African guitars and the percussive rhythms Paton is famous for producing, but features a great deal of supplementary instrumentation from Hargreaves as well. Mojo Storm have often been a large collective of musicians collaborating together, veering towards the double digits, but on 'Life', they consist of only two principle songwriters. The record does however feature a great roster of backing vocalists, used to complement Paton's universal themes; the collage of sounds from around the world that make up 'Life' are part of Paton's political intentions to create a "better" and "more harmonious tomorrow", which is reflected in his work as a lyricist and singer: key motifs include the end of Apartheid and a world of freedom.

Despite their wishes to make 'Life' an "intimate" experience, Mojo Storm are primarily a live act, both at home and abroad; they've toured South Africa and made a trip to the Royal Albert Hall. As a result, 'Life' is tailored for their performances, made with a looseness that offers improvisational space for the duo's live shows. In this way, it reflects their free-form drum class origins. Along with its pointed lyrical content, 'Life' contains long, stretching instrumental passages that reflect on Paton's belief in the importance of meditation and hypnotic rhythm. It's recommended for fans of fusion music that takes on older, traditional world sounds, be they from Africa or Jamaica, attempting to bring sounds from all over the world into English consciousness.

9/10 Paul Customer review, 18th August 2015

This was Mojo Storm's first and - it now turns out - only album.

You can track listing here http://mojostorm.co.uk/ and listen here http://mojostorm.co.uk/sounds.html

Kevin Paton died unexpectedly at home in Liverpool on Friday after picking up what seemed to be a minor virus - a devastating blow to his wife and two daughters and those who knew him.

This is a fine testament to the original music of a great man who bundled soul and energy in to everything he did - just have a listen.

In the fine tradition of musicians, and of people who are far too young to have thought of planning for a funeral, Kevin won't have left many worldly goods behind for his young family. I'm sure he would appreciate the rest of this stock at Norman Records selling out, new people discovering his work and the proceeds winging their way to them.

RIP Kevin x
