7/10 Brian Staff review, 15 August 2014

I've not heard much by Actress recently but here comes something from his stable Werk. He's not a horse no. A werkhorse maybe? As with artists on other established artists labels there's something of a reverential sonic palette in common. Moire produces that hazy, urban electronic music that steals magpie-fashion from techno, house, bass music, future hip-hop, ambient and acid to make something fresh-sounding and dynamic.

It's largely great stuff with a nice abstracted funky shuffle and bags of atmosphere. Crisp moody beat grids and spectrally amorphous samples, dazed synths; all these delicately brushed with an irresistible 2am narcotic glaze. 'Shelter' is definitely a quality release, my only problem being that I work in a record shop and being a distillation of so many benchmark innovations made in clubland in the past few years I struggle to find anything particularly unique about this record, regardless of the undeniably high-class production and loving craft that has gone into it. We are currently in the throes of a very modern revolution in sound with a bewildering array of new producers landing at our smelly feet every day and Moire, as with many, is consumed by everything around him. Maybe a couple more releases along the line and he'll find his identity as he already has his feet and he is running.

Don’t let this put you off: he’s up there with FaltyDL and John Heckle and many other contemporary talents. Possibly I’m just totally spoilt by my constant exposure to new developments in sound.
