Funk-jazz fellows Keith Mansfield and Alan Hawkshaw usually have big grins on their faces in stock photos, and they're usually sitting by a piano. They sure know how to pack the big beat, as they show off on their compositions for 'The Big Beat Vol 1', which features lots of organs, lots of trumpets, and lots of riffage.

DRIVE DRIVE DRIVE....Pedal to to the floor, crunching through the gears, tyres screaming....you blahdy idiot Fwank, I said no names, I had to off him then didn't I. He'd have given em my name, it wouldn't have to be Einstein to pin that on us after that. Few drinks to celebrate, tasty bit behind the bar that. Better class of bird serving in the casino's club. Yeah, why not...lets av champagne.
The super wants this gang caught, there's been one too many casualties for his liking. Just keep your eye on that gaff, they'll have to surface sometime. Tension, time ticking by...the agonising wait, stillness on the street, just waiting for that explosion of violence that may be coming round the corner.
Ok...its a bit of a cliche to lock this music into the UK's crimesploitation TV of the 70's, but the sounds here just scream action, drama, glamour... they were made to be used to create atmosphere and musicians of this calibre have done just that. Hammond, bass, drums keys, percussion all used to great effect. There is heavy funk, more reflective jazzy sections, but it really is about that big beat. Even more casual fans of library or tv will recognise one or two of these tracks.
Highly recommended. Just a warning though, if you buy this you'll want to add Big Beat 2 and Afro Rock.
