London-based Japanese producer Anchorsong has an EP out this week on BBE. This guy's been making waves with his chilled out samplescapes and wild live performance style with loads of nimble-fingered sample pad action. This is, unsurprisingly, a 10" full of sample-based electronica, with each piece based around a simple head-nodding rhythm and a dense procession of sounds from soft drones to little vocal snippets and xylophone twinkles.

Despite the songs being often quite sonically dense and the sounds coming from disjointedly disparate sources, the overall effect is driving, rhythmic and colourful, full of subtle melodies and complex overlaid rhythms and yet still easygoing and positive. The title track is particularly fun with lots of clattering live percussion samples as well as handclaps and energetic chanted vocal loops that give it a kind of carnival feel that's offset with some housey synth pulses. Really enjoyable stuff.

9/10 Kristof Customer review, 21st August 2014

Having enjoyed Anchorsong's work on Tru Thoughts I was keen to hear what he was going to come up with after jumping ship to BBE. This is a real treat, from the clear 10" of vinyl the intriguing cover image right up to the music. This is the kind of genre twisting release that could be overwhelming and a little to clever for its own good, but actually delivers the goods whilst retaining a positive uplifting vibe that makes this a dancefloor winner as well as an intelligent piece of music.

From the percussion heavy opener this is good stuff. Deep house twisted with electronica & touches of nu jazz (is that still a thing?) this is the next step on from the type of stuff Bugz In The Attic were doing in the early 00's. File along side the likes of Lone and Four Tet this is a producer to keep an eye on.
