On 'The Nature Of Connections', Arve Henriksen collaborated with a variety of improv, folk and jazz musicians who composed pieces for him. The record features a variety of touring Norwegian artists brought together by Henriksen, including violinists Nils Okland and Gjermund Larsen, cellist Svante Henryson and double bassist Mats Eilertsen, known formally as The Nature of Connections. The result is a record of minimalist folk and chamber music. Much of 'The Nature of Connections' is made for Henriksen, not by him, including "Hymn", which was written by Ståle Storløkken of experimental act Supersilent.

The diverse and multi-talented scandi-jazzer Arve Henriksen is back with a new album on Rune Grammofon this week, although this time around he’s left the bulk of the songwriting to his friends, being joined by the string quartet of Nils Okland, Svante Henryson, Gjermund Larsen and Mats Eilertsen, as well as drummer Audun Kleive, for a gentle and affecting set of chamber jazz/folk/neoclassical prettiness.
Also of interest is the fact that one of the songs, ‘Hymn’, was written by his Supersilent cohort, Elephant9 mastermind and Motorpsycho collaborator Stale Storlokken. It’s a lovely breathy thing full of puttering percussion, sad repetitive cello sawing and mournfully interwoven trumpet and violin lines that expands into a plucky double bass solo and then some smokily atmospheric, almost theatrical chord changes, little bit Craig Armstrong-does-‘Peter and the Wolf’.
Still, with six different songwriters over the course of the record it’s a pretty diverse album that explores all kinds of folky sadness and jazzy weirdness over its course, even some John Barry-ish easy listening pop on ‘Keen’, and feels like a true collaboration rather than simply an Arve Henriksen album. At the end of the day it’s a very pretty album and if you’re into modern chamber neoclassical type stuff or already a fan of Henriksen, you’re sure to enjoy it.
