My Panda Shall Fly is the alter-ego of South London-based Sri Lankan producer Suren Seneviratne, who paints an intriguing series of electro acoustic tapestries over the course of this short but sweet six-tracker.

The list of instruments incorporated in this recording is as long as my arm so I'm not going to list them out to you but I counted and there's 65 different instruments, from manipulated samples and electric guitar to wooden wind sculpture, tuned clay dish, Wurlitzer and tongue drum(?). It probably won't surprise you to learn that these are very busy-sounding pieces, with even the more downbeat tracks such as 'Old Tupi' littered with fluttering static and strange little rhythmic and melodic details amidst its synth-wash wooze.

The subtle lively polyrhythms sometimes have a bit of a Fourtet feel but then there's some stumbling east-meets-west business going on with some of the instrumentation and percussion that can almost feel like a hyperactive Muslimgauze in places. Despite the dizzying layers of rhythm and melody, Seneviratne manages to conjure a sound that's instantly infectious, exotic but strangely familiar. I'm impressed.
