8/10 Mike Staff review, 01 August 2014

Here's a 7" from post-punky Belgian shoepop/dreamgaze outfit Newmoon, who play a very well observed take on the genre. On the A side we've got 'Invitation to Hold', which starts slow and tentative before stomping into a driving groove full of MBV-esque wall-of-wibble guitars and daydreamy Slowdive pacing. The vocals are all breathy and smudged under the wall of chiming, fizzing guitars and the melodic hook is pretty catchy too. Cool track, very authentically early-'90s sounding.

Over on the other side are two slightly shorter tracks which continue along similar shoegazey lines but with a touch of grungey immediacy and slightly more cutting guitar tones, closer DW_LL being particularly crisp and jangly in comparison to the previous two tracks. It's all making me feel rather nostalgic. Other fans of early '90s shoegazey sounds will likely feel the same.
