Conan have committed their filthy, ocean-sized sound to wax (and the slightly less cvlt compact disc) twice thus far- with more fetid output always on the horizon. First came the hulking mass of debut album Horseback Battle Hammer (Throne, Aurora Borealis), followed by a split with like-minded sludge-lords, Slomatics (Head of Crom, Burning World).

In December 2011 Conan returned to the remote wilderness of Foel Studio, Wales and into the capable hands of producer Chris Fielding for their next album which is to be released on Burning World Records in Spring 2012.

Monnos by Conan

9/10 Tom 24th May 2018

Conan's debut album proper Monnos built upon the buzz generated by their debut EP Horseback Battle Hammer. Billing themselves as 'Caveman Battle Doom', Conan are probably the UK's most well known and most well-exported doom band of the last ten years, mastering the art of downtuned, primal riffing and taking it across the globe.

I still think Monnos is their best album and it contains some of their most enduring fan favourites, including the blinding opener "Hawk as Weapon", "Battle in the Swamp" and "Grim Tormentor". Faster than their snails-pace debut EP, Monnos balances the slow and low with the riotous to perfection. And it's worth buying for Tony Roberts' gorgeous cover art alone!
