White Label Renegade EP by Taal Mala

MM004, and their inaugural vinyl 001, defiantly celebrate the furthest reaches of the reconstructed. The pairing of thick and physical sub bass with ruthlessly looped and chopped vocal snippets can keep a body and brain in a sort of rhythmic stasis, a trance induced by the melding of the tangible and the esoteric.

Taal Mala has crafted a release equal parts frenetic and calculated; reflective and energetic; organic and artificial. The fourth release from Western Canada’s bleeding edge of bass straddles the line between dance music and post-postmodern art as effectively as anything being released today.

Bubble assimilates dancehall tradition into something fragmented, digitized, and newly coherent. Tiny bits of human voice are fully appropriated into a dissonant soundscape of shuddering percussive elements, reamplified and decontextualized into a hypnotic computed chant. Love Lies Bleeding leads listeners from euphoric dance to angular breakdown and back again along a shifting path of falling bass tones and modulated drums. Modern Math steps boldly into vinyl’s warm embrace with White Label Renegade and its accompanying Grenier redo.

It is here that MM004 reaches its crescendo of pure, raw, physical movement. Vocal shouts punctuate immense drops of plodding sub bass and rapid rolling kick drums and high hats. Grenier reinterprets the original’s alternating dense drops and light, airy breaks into a synthesized booty jam. Softer edges and a hint of the tropical launch the frantic original into a multi-faceted genre-transcendent electronic exploration.
