This is a record ideal for those times when you need something dangerously relaxing on your ears. It should come with a health warning: "Do not drive or operate machinery whilst listening to this record".
Its beautiful twinkling instrumental hip-hop of the type produced by Madlib, J Dilla and all the way from Wolverhampton, Bibio. But this is so gentle. Its like rain falling on a rock and splashing in the sun or being tickled with the worlds softest feather. On ‘Snorlax’ the beats are so subdued as to be barely there. The whole album is like this - it has a sleepy narcoleptic feel to it which makes it all the more surprising when you hear a snippet of a thug MC as on ‘VHS Chords’, the following ‘Shoreline’though is one of the most beautiful pieces on the album, its soft synth chords recalling Prefuse 73 in Savath and Savalas mode.
There have been a few records like this of late, last weeks MatthewDavid was one but this is more close to the lovely Sela album on Flau. Minimal jazzy almost soporific hip hop, utterly no good for thugging out on the mic but perfect for a lovely summers afternoon spent going to sleep.
