This is a collection of some of the prime cuts of West Coast laid back rapper JonWayne's cassette releases, remastered, and pressed on lovely thick vinyl. JonWayne fits perfectly onto the Stones Throw roster lo fi backpack hip hop with a wordy delivery and bedroom produced beats.

8/10 Clinton Staff review, 01 August 2014

New on Stones Throw, one of the few labels that I’d get out of bed for in the morning. This is a collection of some of the best bits from Jonwayne’s cassette releases now on vinyl. Check the title  - its easy when you know how.

Its nice to know that out of the 4 records I’ve selected for myself there is one I genuinely like. This is lo-fi bedroom back pack hip-hop, full of lots of interesting samples, a J Dilla ish cut and splice production technique and a kind of nonchalent delivery that, like that of MF Doom, suggests the rapper has added his voice whilst listening to the music from a bleed from a set of headphones over the other side of the room. I’m not sure if its intentional but I like the effect.

Opener ‘Gross’ is fantastic, a taste you must try before you die. ‘Bukowski’ is another nice track with some slinky phasing background and a wordy thug-free delivery. The most unusual of samples are picked, ‘Curious’ for example is based around some random jazzy piano which curdles in and out of the mix. The delivery doesn’t knock your head off but it glides along nicely and four tracks in, there’s none of the testosterone fuelled phobia that mars some of the Odd Future stuff. I'm also hearing hints of the early, inventive Anticon records though without the sometimes off-putting nerdiness. Nice lo-mid fi inventive hip-hop for your Friday morning.
