As We Turn by TOY

7/10 Clinton 16 July 2014

Toy are such a 7 out of 10 band aren’t they? Their music is not bad. But its not good either. It hovers around the 7 zone, no more, no less. They’ve moved on a bit on their most recent album as lead track ‘As We Turn’ demonstrates, its a sighing 60’s influenced piece of off-kilter pop somewhere betwixt Deerhunter and The Horrors. As I say its ok.

For B sides we get ‘You Won’t Be The Same’ culled from a ‘Part Time Punks’ session. Sounding a bit like early Primal Scream or Stone Roses its a swirling 60’s referencing effort with slap-dash vocals which add somewhat to its charm. Fine if lacking anything special but they are grafters this lot and I imagine they’ll come up with something mindblowing given time.

Overleaf  Tom Furse (of pals The Horrors) does what he terms an "extrapolation", ie take a few random guitar sounds from the original and stretch is out to a dreamy blissed out hypnotic groove which heads firmly into The Orb terra firma.
