By total coincidence I’m wearing Sun Ra on my T-shirt today and I’ve wound up with this 7” tribute to the great man on my review pile. I haven’t come across Salah Ragab and the Cairo Jazz Band before but this was recorded in the early ‘70s and sounds pretty much how you would expect - lively jazz with a bit of a Middle Eastern wiggle to it.

On side A we’ve got ‘A Tribute to Sun Ra’ which is a nice bouncy shuffle which centres around some lively brass melodies underpinned by shuffling piano and percussion and quite a tightly structured almost trad-jazz feel. Over on the other side we’ve got ‘Latino In Cairo’, an irresistibly danceable number with a stripped back line-up featuring multiple percussionists puttering away like their life depends on it over some bright, energetic piano and double bass. A flute and a sax pipe up in the second half too but the main focus is on the ferocious Latin polyrhythms and exuberant ivory-tinkling.

Totally worth checking out if your wallet can handle it.
