Cold Name is the solo alter-ego of Jesse Ruins' Nobuyuki Sakuma, and this week he's got an album out on the reliable Desire imprint. From the Cold Cave-ish artwork I was expecting a cold wavey type sound but this is actually a subtle and slowly-unfolding electronica album featuring 12 tracks of soft and detailed synths, samples and drum machines that throb and ooze in a gloopy dream-like mass.   Sakuma weaves physical textures like the crackle of a record's run-out groove or a piano or chopped and echoed vocal samples to lend the gentle loopy tapestries a gritty physicality and the hard, danceable moments are scattered quite sparingly through the record, but that makes them all the more effective when they do arrive. 'Isabelle's Black' sticks out on first listen, sticking to the plot with gentle class for the most part in a Forest Swords/Ela Orleans stumble before unexpectedly breaking into a muddy house beat lifted by growling synth octaves. It's really classy stuff throughout, playful and varied sampletronica.
