Nottingham’s hypno-stoner rock troupe Kogumaza return this week with a head-nodding follow-up to their excellent self-titled 2011 debut, and this time they’ve got Lungfish Nathan Bell helping out throughout, and Enabler Pete Simonelli pitches in on one track too. Bell seems to have become a semi-permanent fixture in the band, having appeared with them on tour already and played on their split 7” with Hookworms from last year.
It’s a thoroughly enjoyable LP, full of mystical repeato riffs and restrained, patiently unfolding arrangements that beg comparison both with Bell’s former band Lungfish and fellow UK kraut-psych phenomenons Mugstar - they have that same willingness to ride a groove for as long as feels right without feeling the need to push it into a tedious loud/quiet/loud post-rock formula or adorn it with squealing Acid Mothers / Cosmic Dead psych splatter. Instead it’s focused, driving and heavily stoned hypno-rock that ebbs and flows in a hive-mind throb of cleverly layered repeato fragments and meandering feedback trails. Top notch, as you’d expect!
