Though Alessandro Cortini is better known as a member of Nine Inch Nails, you don't need to be a fan of Trent Reznor's industrial unit in order to appreciate his solo work. This, his debut album, is a heartbreakingly gorgeous affair with spellbinding cracked electronica bringing to mind Aphex Twin Selected Ambient Works and the Caretaker. Now back available as a limited edition of 400 copies. Don't miss out.

- Sonno by Alessandro Cortini
Alessandro Cortini is the lead electronics performer in the Nine Inch Nails live outfit. If your interest in this record weighs on your tolerance of NIN then I ask you to dispense with that fact and approach this record with an open mind. I for one am no NIN fan and yet this record has been quietly and subtly creeping its way into my conscious over the last week or so. The NIN affiliation put me off checking his previous two LP’s on Important Records and I’m now totally kicking myself for sleeping on those.
‘Sonno’ is a near perfect nocturnal listen; glistening with heartbreaking melodies emerging from the decayed, brittle dark ambient soundscapes. Apparently recorded in hotel rooms using a Roland MC 202 and delay pedal it’s a stark reminder of what can be achieved with minimal tools when channeling pure emotion through the circuits. On the surface it appears fairly rudimentary but part of the charm is in the simplicity.
Across all tracks there's a weighty emotional depth that betrays the means in which it was created. Although the general mood is somewhat dark and somber there’s an almost childlike innocence at play. Moments remind me of the atmosphere generated by Aphex Twins' Selected Ambient Works II if it were reworked by The Caretaker. Totally tranquil, heartwarming stuff that’s very much recommended.
