8/10 Mike Staff review, 08 July 2014
Lots of effort gone into presentation here. This picture 10" comes in a transparent sleeve with a band logo sticker on the front, and comes complete with an individually-wrapped band logo acid blotter sheet and not one but two mini-zines with pictures and words about The Telstar Sound Drone and other Subsuburban acts. So what do you need to know about The Telstar Sound Drone? Well, they're named after the satellite and not the Joe Meek song, they recorded these songs at the "Telstar Sound Dome", their guitarist is referred to only as "The Hobbit", and they sound like Primal Scream, BRMC and the Hookworms on a sweaty acid trip.   They're fond of drones, distortion and backwards-masked guitars and all-enveloping synth bloop carnage which builds into pleasingly chaotic throbbing hypno-rock with an uplifting raga-ish simplicity. Of the two tracks here, 'Feel It' is the rockier one (although the backwards guitars feature heavily), with a slightly baggy groove driven along by a wall of shuddering synth and distorto guitar wobbles, while 'Someone' on the other side goes deeper into their hypnagogic sound-layering side, which I prefer. Both strong tracks though, and apparently there's bonus remixes in the download too. Lots of effort gone into this.
