This new CD from Francisco Lopez is likely to polarise opinions. Sound artist Francisco Lopez has constructed this single half-hour piece out of field recordings of birdsong which he recorded between 1995 and 2010 around Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Spain, South Africa, Costa Rica, Mexico and Peru, rendered mostly unrecognisable though "extreme mutation and evolution" which I think means computer processing?   The piece starts out very quiet, the first 10 minutes or so are almost imperceptible as Lopez slowly eases his way into your subconscious. Presumably he wants you to turn it up really loud for maximum effect later on. There are a few recognisable chirrups and hoots going on, but for the most part it's weird drifting ambience, static drones and solar wind whooshes and clicks and super-slo-mo honk'n'flutter, taking us from barely there cosmic ambience to chaotic and confusing sound collage in a slowly evolving tapestry of unrecognisably manipulated audio.   Weird and slow-moving stuff that you're likely to either love or hate.
