I'm not sure how many new releases prolific Finnish psych-rockers Circle are dropping this week, but two of them have landed in my review pile. I'm starting out with this album 'Leviatan', which sees them abandon the use of electricity, going all acoustic (aside from a few keyboard touches and samples of NASA space sounds) in an understated LP of hypnotic mystical folky kraut murmurings.
The results are intriguing, varying from sinister fingerpicked sadness with spoken Finnish vocals to triumphantly plodding Angels Of Light-ish folk-rock incantations, but always with a smoky, repetitive, almost ritualistic heaviness despite the understated arrangements. Compelling stuff, proof that these guys are still full of surprises. And if that's not enough to convince you, just wait till you hear the new 7"...
