Another Hugh Tracey collection of 50s Congolese music, this time presenting the Katanga guitar sound. Based on the traditional likembe music of the various Luba peoples and their neighbours, Katanga came about partly as a result of increasing modernisation and urbanisation amongst communities who bought modern guitars and other instruments with wages they'd earned in the mines.
Also includes three rhumbas from the flourishing, mixed nightlife of Stanleyville (Kisangani) area.
Tracks:Masengu Mama Josephina Muleka Mwene Yombwe Antoinette Wa Kolwezi Safari Wa Baraka Mangaay Muleka Mwene Ngoie Mudima Zenzele Masanga Mama Na Mwana Bombalaka Sokuchomale Jikita Nachelewa Colette
