“Blow ‘Love Sweet Love’ out yr ass. What the world needs now is more solo drumming albums!”, exclaims the press release to this solo drumming album, ‘Nihilist Chakai House’ by Pascal “Pascal” Nichols, the one in Part Wild Horses Mane On Both Sides with a beard and no vagina. The press release is quite a read actually, all “sticks (made from hollow heron’s legs) giving that extra venerable edge to the membranous drones and crisp celery crunch”, “resinous wooden bumps” and “the stutter of fudge-footed mice”.
Not that I can blame them really, as this is terrifically tough music to describe, with Pascal’s relentless puttering being more of a slowly shifting tone poem than a rhythmic piece - rarely not a groove-laden one at least. A clock ticks as a snare flaps and rattles in a mechanical crescendo, electronic drones hum and hang over languorous snare and bass drum repetition. Challenging but spirited and engaging.
