Landlady have a new album of clever indie pop out this week, their first on Hometapes. This lot, led by singer/songwriter Adam Schatz, play a grand and universal indie-soul with big arrangements and timeless melodies, following in the traditions of bands like Spoon, TV on the Radio and Matthew E White.   Of course, this kind of thing sinks or swims on its songwriting, and these are wonderfully written, lyrically wry with occasional bursts of Beach Boys-ish harmony overload, imaginative arrangements, intuitive hooks and a voice that's quirky but likeable, almost like a slightly less strained and high-pitched Danielson. If I have a gripe it's that they've got a taste for big sweeping post-rock endings with giant rousing build-ups, and one or two of those on an album is all well and good but when it's happening all the time it's a bit predictable.   A minor quibble, however, because overall this is a pretty special album.
