We’re woefully short of decent electronic music to tell you about this week but this Floating Points 12” is sort of filling the hole.

Its dead minimal soft techno music which doesn’t build as such but uses subtle shifts in dynamics to make its point. I really like the sporadic vocal samples which glide in and out of the mix and the general feel of late night melancholy. Oh.. hold on... that was the B side and I was playing it at the wrong speed (I think - again dreadful labelling).

The A side is a much more realised piece with real drums (or samples of real drums) on top of which some bloopy funky-ish synths have been added. Not much happens until half way through where some vibraphone threatens to introduce a funk workout yet the track is stripped back to squelshy bass before the elements creep back in.

I still can’t believe that B side plays at 45rpm, seems far too fast to me. If it does play at 33rpm then its lamplit late-night-tronics are the highlight.
