This album marks a significant step forward for Pretty Lights auteur Derek Vincent Smith. He has previously worked magpie-like as a sample collage artist, but this time round he's gone to the effort of recording all his own samples and getting them pressed onto vinyl, which he uses in conjunction with a custom built analogue synth to make the sounds on this record.   It's an unusual and labour-intensive approach but 'A Color Map of the Sun' is, at the end of it all, a thoroughly enjoyable listen, echoes of DJ Shadow, Fatboy Slim, Avalanches and Cherrystones rattling around in its conscious era-mashing patchwork that's as comfortable borrowing from hip-hop, dubstep and metal as big band jazz, classic soul and subtle electronica. The songs are catchy and danceable too, all in all it's an inventive and colourful listen, perfect for this hot weather we've been having.
