8/10 Souki 10 July 2014

A nice trip down memory lane to the days I first moved to Leeds back in 2000-and-something and started fishing around in the electronica section at Jumbo Records… oh, hang on - this record came out this week.  I can only assume that the four artists that make up this compilation must’ve been at primary school whilst I was smoking weed in bed and listening to The Braindance Coincidence for the first time.  Unless they’re my age now and still really into that stuff.  Either is fine.  Over the four tracks here we get a whole mixture of sounds that are typical of that late 90s/early 00s period.  Lots of acid squelches, skittering mechanical beats, fuzzy introspective melancholic melody, stuff that sounds good early in the morning when you’ve stayed up all night.

Automatic Tasty’s ‘Winter’s Evening’ could’ve been lifted straight from Bochum Welt’s ‘Greenwich EP’, Elec Pt1 gives us a narky acid flex a la Luke Vibert or Ceephax and Abraham Cowley comes across like one of the more dreamy artists on the Schematic roster, or Xela when he was still doing twinkly jams.  The JTC track ‘Habit’ probably has the most contemporary bolster, but still with nods to the past.
