9/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 24th November 2014

I was instantly blown away by the first volume of Country Funk. Every track was winner. My first scan down the track list and couple of listens to volume II however, left me a bit cold. I was pleased to see the likes of Townes Van Zandt, Dillard & Clark and Bill Wilson, but a little put off by Bobby Darin, Dolly Parton and Jackie DeShannon’s version of “The Weight”. However, now I have given it enough time it’s equally as good as its predecessor. “California Women” by Hoyt Axton is awesome; this and “Tulsa turnaround” by Kenny Rogers and The First Edition really do sum up everything good about this swampy new sub-genre. Then there’s the utterly fantastic “Shotgun Willie” by Willie Nelson. I’m just delighted that I gave this a bit of time after my initial disappointment. Here’s to Volume III!
