Alluvium by Maps & Diagrams

Tim "Maps and Diagrams" Diagram returns this week with another sinfully limited collection of slow, warm ambient subtlety. The 14 tracks on 'Alluvium' are split into three numbered sections, and accordingly have been released not only on a regular CD limited to 50 (which is what we have here) but also three 3" CDs in a smaller edition of just 40!   So many words have already been written on this site about Diagram's work that it's hard to know what to say about this one except that it's business as usual - delicate electro acoustic compositions that skirt around the periphery of melody with the help of faltering synth drones, elegant guitar twinkles and tastefully placed field recordings. As with his previous recordings, it's making me feel lovely, he really does have a great ear for hopeful tones which have a skilfully balanced lightness to them.   'Quartz' at the start of the third section is a highlight, looped static and vinyl crackle gradually becoming inhabited by gracefully plucked guitar, uplifting synth-harp arpeggios and Sun Araw/Dolphins Into The Future-ish post-dub bubblings. The whole album is just as lovely and therapeutic as you would expect from this safe pair of hands. Delightful stuff, perfect to help you kick back and forget about your troubles for a bit.
