What is it with Woodsist and male singers singing in a slightly strained falsetto? I just about got to grips with this years Woods album because the songs were so damn strong but given the choice I’d have had the vocals in a lower register. Same with this album by singer songwriter Matt Kivel. I’m enjoying the laid back strummy pop on offer but with the vocals so hi-pitched and his tendency to mumble somewhat, its very hard to connect with any kind of meaning behind the songs. Musically its all post-Pavement slightly off-kilter flannel shirted guitar rock. Its doing a job, nothing more. Its so laid back that it seems to have been recorded with the band half asleep  - no bad thing. But if I can’t get past the vocal style then there’s no hope really.
