When Phil handed me this LP saying it'd be "noisy" I was picturing some scratchy late '80s Chicago sounding scuzz-rock, but actually Straight Arrows are dealing in '60s style garage-pop fuzz that makes me think of The Seeds, The Milkshakes, the Pebbles comps and stuff on labels like Dirty Water. Turns out I reviewed (and very much enjoyed) another of their albums about a year ago. It's a good thing I write these things down because I'm always forgetting what I thought. They rattle their way through 13 tracks of catchy and throwaway garage pop trash full of crunchy downstrokes, buzzy distortion, pounding Rolling Stones-esque shuffle rhythms and ridiculously catchy vocal hooks, often bolstered with some sweet harmonies and telephone distortion.   In terms of contemporaries, it's reminding me a lot of Berlin's shadowy Bikes - a great balance between all-out snottiness and deceptively resourceful pop songwriting with an unabashed love for the proto-punk garage sound. Most of the obvious reference points are pre-'1970, but if you're in thrall to the Nuggets and Pebbles comps and wish more people still made music that sounds like that, here's a band that do! Great fun.
