Sirius B by The Heliocentrics

London's progressive funksters Heliocentrics are back in action this week with this latest 12" EP, which features guest vocals from rapper Vast Aire on lead track 'Sirius B', a slow-burner with a slightly Roni Size-ish feel with its aggressive vocal, teasing beat and cheeky double bass action, the tension pushed further still by some haphazard piano plinks and grainy brass samples. It's quite slinky but also strangely malevolent-sounding.   This smoky mixture of light and dark continues on the other side with 'Vibrations of the Fallen Angels', mixing plaintive goose-honking brass, lovely soft jazzy drum grooves, tasteful speech really goes off about halfway through where some guy starts listing things like "John Lennon" and "fascism" and then it goes into almost Brian Jonestown Massacre meets Death in Vegas with backwards guitar wobbles, twanging sitars, shivering violin and all sorts of rhythmic and melodic layers lolloping woozily through its smoky grooves. I'm digging this one even more than the A side to be honest, but they're both decent tracks.
