8/10 Penrith Steve 24th October 2014

I had assumed for a long time since stumbling across them in the early 2000s that American Analog Set were a project involving John McEntire or Jim O’Rourke due to them having similar instrumentation to Tortoise or Gastr Del Sol, but they’re I was quite wrong. I imagine that they will appeal to fans of both, although purists may argue that they’re just too pop for their tastes. To me, they sound like a mild krautrock band, this is a good thing. “Know By Heart”, they’re fabulous album from 2001 opens with “Punk As Fuck” a misleading title for this gentle song with lyrics like “I’m On Your Side, and we’re always right, it’s perfect and we’re worth it”. The Krautrock influence is most evident on “Like Foxes Through Fences”. “Gone To Earth” is one of the highlights, To these ears the vocal sounds a little like Elliott Smith in his Heatmiser days. “Million Young” has a touch of Stereolab about it, no bad thing of course. “The Kindness Of Strangers” could be by The Postal Service, in fact, If you were to imagine Benjamin Gibbard backed by an early 90s incarnation of Tortoise, it would be fair to say that overall, that’s what this album sounds like. A solid album.
