Not paid a huge amount of attention to the London based outfit Dignan Porch before. They began life as solo project by Joseph Walsh that has slowly evolved over a couple of albums and singles (primarily for the excellent Captured tracks label) into a full band effort.

‘Observatory’ is the groups first LP for Cold Pumas/The Soft Walls guitarists Faux Discx label and it’s a mixed bag of ambitious “mid-fi” (I’ve never heard this phrase used before but it’s an apt description) indie rock songs, some squelchy and Outer Limits Recordings sounding (opener ‘Forever Unobscured’) and others more laidback and folksy (‘Veil Of Hze’).

Personally I’m enjoying the stranger, off-kilter stuff best. The odd mix of traditional indie pop songwriting with budget pedal abuse and odd production techniques gives tunes like ‘No Lies’ and ‘Between the Trees’ a real unique sense of character. Good stuff.
