Here’s a split 12” between a band I’ve not heard, Berlin trio Abrakadabra (“groove-ridden dissonance” says the press release), and one I have heard, local trio Magnapinna (“dissonant, groove-ridden” says the press release).
First thing’s first then, I’m listening to Abrakadabra’s side and it’s pretty strong ‘90s-style indie rock/post-hardcore with elements of June of 44, Rodan, Unwound and a hint of late ‘80s Chicago noisiness. Their second track ‘Sonic Forcefield’ is the highlight of this side, a face-battering minimal groove with crunchy staccato guitar. It’s a bit of a Steve Albini pastiche but well done and satisfyingly violent, although the recording is a little muddy and lacks a bit of the scything trebly punch that you get from Shellac.
Over to the other side and we find Magnapinna’s three offerings. I’ve seen this band before and I’m pretty sure they were instrumental then (and dressed as ninjas? Thinking back, it might just have been a dream...) but peddling a similar style of twisty-turny indie prog that’s got a bit of a midwestmo (you know, Owls, Braid, Cap’n Jazz, etc) vibe to its spidery, intricate guitar lines and off-mic hollers, but the pace is more measured and the song structures are somewhat sprawling and mathily unpredictable. Solid efforts all round but the production on both sides might serve the music better if it was a little punchier.
