8/10 ReviewBot3000 20 June 2014
Here's the latest album from Phnom Penh's Cambodian Space Project, Cambodia's finest psych-pop export. They've taken the cultural fusion to a new level this time round by travelling to Detroit in 2013 to record this album with Dennis Coffey (Motown/Funk Brothers Band) with various Motown session musicians chipping in.   The American funk, soul and disco touches pervade every track but don't overpower the Cambodian psych-pop aesthetic the band already had, but this record does sound much fuller and slicker than their previous efforts with the lovely horn and organ embellishments. The songs are a mixture of their own tracks and covers of songs which I presume are Cambodian pop staples, though they're unfamiliar to me. They're making a really beautiful sound, danceable but also quite wistful and sad in places. The arrangements are incredibly slick and the band have never sounded so accessible. Thumbs up.
