'60s-loving garage popsters Shannon and the Clams and Guantanamo Baywatch finally share wax on this new 7" from good ol' Suicide Squeeze. I'm fond of both these bands already and they're pretty well matched here. On side A Shannon and the Clams do 'Mama' which is a soul ballad with full-throated vocals against a warm, gentle shuffle. It sounds a lot like the '60s-inspired works of the King Khan & BBQ Show or the more girl group-influenced moments from the band they're sharing this record with.   Which brings me to the Guantanamo Baywatch side, which it pains me to say is a bit silly and throwaway. I really like this band, I think they're probably ever so slightly the stronger band on this split but they've opted for a novelty country-pop song here with twangy guitars and twangier vocals. To their credit it is very catchy and not all that terrible, but it's pretty unrepresentative of what the band usually sounds like. There's a cute little spot of Jimmy Bryant-esque guitar soloing towards the end that's gorgeous, but only about five seconds long. To be honest I'm a little bit disappointed with this one because their 'Chest Crawl' LP totally rips in more of a hard garage/instrumental surf style (if you've not heard the band before, track down a copy, seriously), but it's alright and Shannon and the Clams' song is really good.
