9/10 Mike Staff review, 19 June 2014
Here's the second offering from noise-poppers Stagnant Pools, whose coolly searing tones find a perfect match in engineer Matt Talbot, whose own band Hum are never too far away in the shimmering walls of ethereally layered guitar fuzz. Stagnant Pools' sound is anchored by a weary croon of a vocal which hovers lazily over blazing rivers of Sonic Youth/JAMC guitar distortion, raising their defeated romanticism into something churning, pulsating, strangely hopeful, in a way that invites comparison to bands like Dinosaur Jr or even Echo & the Bunnymen.   The more I listen to it, the more compelling I'm finding it. The mixture of crunchy heaviness and silky, slow-gliding vocal melodies give it a strangely alien, weightless feel and the layers of throbbing, shrieking guitar fuzz are perfectly captured so the whole thing sounds cavernous. Add to that some catchy and affecting songwriting and you've got an album I would willingly listen to repeatedly. Recommended.
