Former Osker vocalist Devon Williams has brought out album number three of his ambitious soft-pop business on Slumberland. It's a finely crafted blend of different types of music with -pop suffixes; power pop, indie pop, psych pop and jangle pop. Pretty much everything but punk-pop. Williams has a likeable voice and the songs are sometimes slightly humourous (I hope intentionally) in a kind of John Hughes soundtrack way.   Stylistically Williams allows himself a lot of freedom, one minute he's atop a mountain shredding out some triumphant rock guitar, the next he's crooning over soft synths and watery guitars. Despite this the album holds together well and never feels thrown together. His infatuation with '80s soft pop is such that I'm finding that it sounds strangely dated, despite being new. I guess it's kind of the logical next step from all the dreamy AOR and classic synth action that's been going on. A bit patchy but there are some really good bits.
