9/10 Mike Staff review, 30 May 2014
Hip-hop legend Sage Francis is back with his first album in four years this week, and 'Copper Gone' starts with a rap-metal bang on 'Pressure Cooker', all gang-vocal chorus chants and visceral live guitar and drums. 'Grace' follows it with thoughtful, cinematic introspection and it's clear that Francis's vicious sonic ambition is still smouldering. This refusal to acknowledge the boundaries between hip-hop and rock music runs through much of his work but it's never been this meticulously realised.   The rhymes are relentless throughout the album, as he rants and muses about modern life with a nonstop stream of invective which is far more thoughtful than its delivery suggests. The computer-game-esque synth bloops and earthy trumpet melodies in 'Cheat Code' are an instant highlight for me, but this is the kind of album where so much action occurs in such a short time that I'm not going to properly absorb what's going on until long after this review is finished, but it's immediately clear that Sage is still as dangerous and imaginative as any of the pretenders who've crawled out from the shadows since he last dropped an LP. Cavernous-sounding, verbose and futuristic hip-hop goodness.
