Sounding something akin to Elliot Smith performing The Band's 'The Night they Drove Old Dixie Down', this young man has been gathering plaudits amongst the twitterati for his soulful countryish numbers. I was enjoying opener 'Christian Eyes' right up until the moment he mentioned Gram Parsons, that coupled with an elongated guitar solo made me lose interest somewhat. Still the vocals are pretty sweet.

Elsewhere 'Crooked Time' is a gorgeously realised slow burning drift which sounds rather like Low's latest efforts. Finally the title track veers back into the countryish lilt of the opener. Weirdly, this sounds almost exactly like a Dolly Parton weeper. How? This guy is a man! But somehow it does.  Its more trad than the other tracks present with lashings of boogie woogie piano that you can bet your bottom dollar will be tickled by Jools Holland when Max appears on 'Later...'
