Tone-worshipping Chicago duo Cleared are back this week with another LP of their distorto-drone compositions, mixing electronics, guitars, and lots of sounds whose original sources are pretty much anyone's guess. After starting out with a passage which is certainly guitar sounds, they drift into a kind of dystopian ambience that is both deeply impenetrable and strangely intuitive, full of grinding industrial drones and electrical crackles.   'Nights' is notable for straying from this formula to include quite easily distinguishable drums and guitar for a weird chiming post-punk instrumental. The drums reappear on the second side, for the album closer and also for the chilling 'Mercury', which mixes the rock and dark ambient sides of their sounds to spooky effect, with drums so sparse they're practically arrhythmic alongside a dense fog of breathily circling drones, some smooth, some rather high-pitched, and some with a mysterious bubbly crunch to them.   It's pretty weird stuff, a very difficult to pigeonhole mixture of dark ambient, post-punk and sound design that's full of gnarled sonic details.
