9/10 Mike Staff review, 04 June 2014
Verma return this week with an LP on Trouble In Mind, who’ve been putting out a lot of good records lately. I’ve encountered this lot before on a 7” they did for HoZac but this is my first chance to get properly involved with their churning, volatile kraut-psych.
The formula is fairly simple, singer Whitney Johnson soaring Zola Jesus-like over heavy and repetitive cosmic psychedelia full of choppy Hookworms basslines, synths carving out dreamlike Eno waves and hypnagogic Hawkwind whooshes and while a distorted Jesus and Mary Chain guitar slices and crunches. In places it’s giving me the same uplifting repeato ritual vibes I get from Goat, only much more informed by Siouxsie and the Banshees and Can and less by the Rolling Stones.
Sometimes they veer into post-punky repeato coldness, and ‘Erato’ gives us a bonged out little space-synth break midway through, but basically this is ambitious head-noddy psych rock with some seriously killer tones and likeable grooves.
