Here's an LP of nicely clattery slacker indie business from Montana's Mordecai, and apparently this album was recorded in a YMCA bathroom complete with "unique aroma". It's very likeable stuff, laid back pop songs delivered with a casual lo-fi noisiness, all slightly out of tune hi-gain guitar jangle and sneering, slightly Mark E Smith-ish vocals.   The press release's description of it being somewhere between Swell Maps, The Fall and Mike Rep is absolutely on the money I think, which perversely makes my job as a reviewer more difficult because now I've read it that's all I'm hearing. I'm enjoying it a lot though, there's a gleefully obnoxious edge to their delivery which really suits the nasty lo-fi recording style and gives them a punky kick even though they never really extend themselves beyond a mid-paced plod.   I can really imagine having my mind blown by this lot in some grimy basement gig in the middle of nowhere. They've got a great balance between big-sounding pop songwriting and snotty self-sabotage that's pretty hard not to like.
