Fresh from a stint at the Death Metal School of Logo Legibility, space-headed German DIY psych collective Datashock are back this week with a follow-up to 2010's superb 'Pyramiden von Giessen'. This time around their deep space theatrics have taken a slightly earthier (dare I say hippier) turn with the swirling synth drones and subtle modular melodies quickly joined by new agey chimes, flute and violin. There's a slow, plodding, heat-hazed desert feel to opener 'Mudschahidin Der Liebe'...in fact the track titles and artwork do seem to bear out this contextual relocation from deep space to the desert.   It's heady stuff, reminding me a little of a more cosmic, feverish Rain Drinkers, or a less pointedly melodic Date Palms - more densely layered than that band, but a similar pace and atmosphere. There's a Sun City Girls-ish east meets west vibe in lots of places and I like how the instrumental focus changes from track to track...the second centres around a twangy banjo and guitar, the third around some pounding tribalistic drum patterns and tangy synth drones, they even finally get a nice mystical stoner groove going halfway through side B on 'Obsidian Karavan Und Die Acht Drachmen'...there's too much going on here for me to dissect really but if you like ritualistic hypno-improv business this one's halfway between the desert and the stars. In case you're wondering what the post-it elf had to say about this one, he wrote "eerie desert weirdy".
