8/10 Clinton Staff review, 10 October 2014
Sometimes, its fair to say, we’re fucking useless. This 12" was filed away in the stockroom, no description or review or press release to hand. I’ve gone to Boomkat to find the info. I feel slightly dirty and had better clear my browsing data before Phil sees. Anyway it’s a new signing to Text, the label run by beats king and electronica overlord Fourtet.
As you might suspect, it’s great. Opener ‘Cars Highway‘ is a sweeping tech house affair with staccato synths pounding house beats and rhythmic voice interruptions. Its hard but melodic hammering along with the growl of an Alfa Romeo Sprint Veloce. ‘Gonna Rain‘ is a kind of mutant house jam with some seriously fizzing bass and chopped off vocals, swells and retracts in all the right places. These chopped vocals are used in the doomier ‘Streetways’ which has a pounding Chicago feel to it much bustlier, more s & m club (or so I’ve heard).
Closer Doug’s Prayer’ is the most abstract, pounding drum intro, housey piano hits and a kind of shouty refrain. Its big bold techy house throughout, kinda shouty but I’m liking it.
