Not sure where this came from but damn DJ Harvey (yes, Harvest Barrett) is making better psych records than the full time nostalgia careerist doing the rounds of late with their daft grey super beards and tie dyed tees.
‘Wildest Dreams’ is some oddity DJ Harvey put together a few years back that someone has been wise enough to commit to wax, that someone being Smalltown Supersound. It’s not crazy original if I’m being honest but as an example piece it’s definitely worth your time and obviously it’s cool hearing a well regarded and pioneering DJ shredding some old school Love/Cream/Doors/Blue Cheer/Groundhogs/Bubble Puppy grooves and own the shit out of his drumkit. Here he plays all the drums (excellently I might add), guitars and takes care of the vocals and, of course, the production too. Multi-talented lad I hear you say.
On first listen it all sounds peachy, due most likely to the care attention taken with the production. Again, this may not be a completely original sounding LP but as a love letter to all things West Coast and psychedelic it’s bang on. Nostalgia working. Think The Stepkids if they were deep into Cream as opposed to Curtis Mayfield.
