8/10 Mike Staff review, 04 June 2014
Olan Mill and Keung Mandelbrot have long been friends but this is the first time the two have collaborated together on a record, one which apparently came together quite organically through the pair simply sitting down with guitars and improvising together. Here, over five tracks, they collect the results of these improvisations, a slow-burning melange of Mill’s refined beauty and Mandelbrot’s grinding, sometimes chaotically noisy machinations.
Dirty spluttering trails of greasy, cracked distorto-crunch and twitchy electro-flickers weave monolithically around gentle, delicate drones and throbs as the two explore their relative texture arsenals with a playful unpredictability that takes us from ambitious noisescapes to quiet passages of twitching, percussive loops of fragmented melodic noise to desolate cosmic drones. It’s a pretty intense listening experience in places but even in its more intense moments there’s a very human energy and lightness to it.
