7/10 Clinton Staff review, 01 May 2014
The Gun Club were a kind of blitzkrieg punk blues group out of LA, an influence on a whole host of people such as R.E.M, The White Stripes and the nascent alt-country movement. Leader Jeffrey Lee Pierce succumbed to a stroke back in 1996 and its a testament to his legacy that a whole pile of movers and shakers are out in force on this album which creates new music out of song sketches, demo recordings, scribbled lyrics and leftover riffs.
They are literally all here including Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, Nick Cave, Mark Lanegan, Primal Scream and the ubiquitous Thurston Moore. It does, however, work very well as an album Opener ‘Nobody City’ is a classic take on the era of cowpunk/blues which also cemented careers for the likes of The Blasters and Del-Lords, dusty LA blues with crazy off the wall singing you later find out is a duet between Iggy Pop and Nick Cave. ‘Kisses For My President’ is a fun piece of 60’s garage led by a gravelly Debbie Harry, ‘Just Like Mexican Youth’ is one of a few tracks that is performed by younger bands, in this case raucous quasi metal Leeds types Black Moth. There are quieter acoustic moments too like ‘Into the Fire’ a duet between Nick Cave and Debbie Harry.
At 18 tracks long I don’t have time for a full resume but its a star studded and nicely put together tribute.
