- Summer's Dead by Eastern Hollows
8/10 Mike Staff review, 01 May 2014
Is it just me or are records getting thicker? I mean I'm used to 180g LPs and the like, but I've got a few lately that have been preposterously chunky. This one's like a big blue boiled sweet! It barely fits in the sleeve. I'm enjoying the music that's on it though. It would appear that Eastern Hollows are one of these dreamgaze/shoepop type bands that there used to be so many of in the '90s and then for a while there weren't many and now there are loads again.
'Summer's Dead' has a dreamy unison melody shared between the guitar and vocals while the rest of the band conjures up a foggy haze of fuzz and reverb underneath. Little bit Cocteau Twins, little bit Slowdive, little bit J&MC, it's dark and heady and I really like the super-distorted rhythm guitar that fizzes away quietly in the background. 'The Collector' is on side B and here they turn down the fuzz for a chiming and doleful bit of sadpop with hints of the Smiths and the Stone Roses about it, wistful and contemplative and again full of reverb, not nearly as fun as the A side but not offensively bad either. A decent single, all told.
